Sedation Dentistry In Stone Ridge, VA

Sedation Dentistry

Many people suffer from dental anxiety. For some, anxiety stems from a negative experience they had in the past. For others, it is the fear of the unknown. Unfortunately, this anxiety often means that patients avoid going to the dentist- which means their issues worsen and become more complex.

Dr. Subha Yerabollu at Prime Family Dentistry offers sedation for patients who suffer from anxiety. In this article, we’ll explain more about sedation dentistry, including what it is, the benefits and side effects, the cost, and how it is performed.

We offer two types of sedation dentistry at Prime Family Dentistry: nitrous oxide and oral sedation.

What Is Sedation Dentistry?

Dental anxiety is common. Sedation dentistry allows anxious patients to feel relaxed and calm during dental visits. It is known as conscious sedation or “twilight” sleep because you are conscious but carefree. You may experience some amnesia and insensitivity to pain.

Sedation Options at Prime Family Dentistry

Prime Family Dentistry offers two types of sedation:
  • Inhalation (nitrous oxide)
  • Oral (tablet, either Valium or Halcion)
We do not offer general anesthesia at this time.

Nitrous Oxide

Nitrous oxide is more commonly referred to as “laughing gas”. It is inhaled through a mask/nosepiece and the calming effects begin within 5 minutes. The dentist will control how much sedation you receive, and the dosage will be adjusted as needed throughout the procedure. When the procedure is over, you will be given pure oxygen to flush the nitrous oxide out. You should be able to drive yourself home, but if you are unsure, you can have someone with you.

Oral

Oral sedation is administered with an oral medication, usually diazepam or triazolam- but may also be lorazepam or zaleplon. For pediatric patients who cannot swallow a pill, liquid medication may be given. Oral sedation makes you feel groggy, and you may fall asleep. However, you are still conscious, so you can communicate and can awaken with a slight nudge. You will need someone to drive you home and sit with you until the sedation wears off because it does affect your motor skills and memory.

What Are the Benefits of Sedation Dentistry

The primary benefit of sedation dentistry is that patients who have anxiety or are unable to remain still for an extended period of time can get the dental treatments they need instead of ignoring them.

When these issues are treated early, before they escalate, patients can enjoy improved oral and overall health.

Who is a Candidate for Sedation Dentistry?

Patients of all ages can benefit from sedation during dental procedures, including pediatric patients. Sedation is often recommended for patients who:

  • Experience anxiety when visiting the dentist
  • Have a sensitive gag reflex
  • Are afraid to visit the dentist
  • Have teeth sensitivity
  • Feel claustrophobic when sitting in the dental chair
  • Have a fear of needles
  • Have a high tolerance to local anesthesia
  • Have difficulty sitting still for an extended period of time
  • Have cognitive, physical, or behavioral needs

Is Sedation Dentistry Safe?

Yes, research has shown that sedation dentistry is safe. However, if you do receive sedation, you will need to have someone that can drive you home following the procedure and sit with you for a few hours until it wears off.

Are There Any Side Effects to Sedation Dentistry?

There are a few potential side effects associated with dental sedation, depending on the type of sedation you receive, including:

  • Dry mouth
  • Drowsiness for the remainder of the day
  • Headaches
  • Nausea
  • Dizziness

These side effects will be discussed during your consultation when creating your treatment plan. This will help you determine the best option for you.

How Is Sedation Dentistry Performed?

The steps for sedation depend on the type of sedation you are receiving. However, here’s what you can typically expect:

You will be settled into the dental chair, ensuring that you are comfortable.

You will be given an oral medication to swallow or a mask will be placed over your nose, which will administer the nitrous oxide. If you are receiving nitrous oxide, you will be instructed to take deep breaths. This will get the medication into your system to help you relax.

When the sedative takes effect- usually within about 30 minutes, the procedure will begin. Since you will be conscious, you can alert the team if you feel any pain or discomfort.

If you require sedation for your dental procedure, you’ll need to request it during your initial consultation.
